I. SCOPE
The policies and procedures provided herein apply to all George Mason
University faculty, staff, students, visitors and contracted services.
Administrative Policy Number 1107 applies to all George Mason University
locations, owned or leased, including Arlington Campus, and GMU at Prince
William.
The management of solid waste and the protection of the environment has
become a critical issue. Federal and State governments are joining private
citizens, local governments and businesses in developing strategies to
effectively implement a recycling program to control and reduce the volume
of waste. A policy for recycling is appropriate and required by the Commonwealth
of Virginia under the 1990 legislation for all state agencies to develop
and implement agency recycling collection programs.
II. POLICY STATEMENT
George Mason University implemented a waste management and recycling collection
program in May, 1989. The 1990 legislation enacted by the Commonwealth
of Virginia requiring all state agencies to initiate a waste management
and recycling collection program emphasizing the importance for George
Mason University to broaden its initiative and exceed the mandated minimum
recycling rates of state law. In addition to the existing recycling program,
the University will initiate programs in public education and public policy
related to solid waste management and recycling.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES
The Vice President for Facilities and the Director of The Physical Plant
will have the responsibilities for the Solid Waste Management and Recycling
Collection Program. The University's designated contact person for interface
with Virginia Department of Waste Management will be the Recycling Coordinator
for the University.
IV. AMENDMENTS AND ADDITIONS
All amendments and additions to Administrative Policy Number 1107 are
to be reviewed and approved by the Office of the Executive Vice President
for Administration and the Office of the Executive Vice President for
Finance and Planning.
V. EFFECTIVE DATE AND APPROVAL
The policies herein are effective July 7, 1993, and were revised March 10, 2004. This Administrative Policy shall be reviewed and revised, if necessary, annually and to become effective at the beginning of the University's fiscal year, unless otherwise noted.
