Animal Facility Injury, Allergy, Bite and Scratch Protocol

The following incidents or conditions involving personnel in any GMU Animal Facility must be reported immediately to the OHSP Director, regardless of severity:

· Physical injuries (e.g. caused by lifting heavy materials or equipment, use of repetitive movements during animal husbandry or experimental protocols...)

· Mechanical injuries (e.g. caused by facility equipment, broken glassware, sharps, heat sources...)

· Chemical injuries (e.g. caused by chemical disinfectants, reagents...)

· Animal bites or scratches

· Symptoms possibly indicative of allergic reaction (e.g. sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, hives, rashes, anaphylaxis...)

· Any other remarkable incident, condition or circumstance; that impairs or diminishes individual well-being or performance

The OHSP Director, in consultation with the subject individual, will determine the course of action.
In the event of a life-threatening incident or an incident in which the immediate threat to the individual cannot be clearly ascertained, arrangements for emergency medical services will be initiated immediately.

Individuals Sustaining Minor Injuries or Presenting with Mild to Moderate Allergy Symptoms

1. If the incident involves a minor dermal laceration or wound, immediately cleanse the injury with soap (preferably antibacterial soap) and wash the injury with running water for at least 5 minutes. Do not apply ointment or spray. Apply a sterile non-stick bandage.

2. Control bleeding by applying direct pressure with a sterile gauze or bandage. Do not apply ointment or spray. Apply a sterile non-stick bandage.

3 Report the incident to OHSP Director

4. In consultation with OHSP Director, administer additional First Aid if appropriate

6. As soon as possible contact the occupational health office, complete and submit an accident report to be retained on permanent file.

Individuals Sustaining Major Injuries or Presenting with Severe Allergy Symptoms

1. CALL 911

2. Administer First Aid.

2. Immediately report all major injuries or severe allergy symptoms to Occupational Health Office.

3. Facility personnel arrange for immediate transport of the subject individual to:

Getting to Inova Fairfax Hospital by Car or Cab

Via I-495 (Capital Beltway)
From the North (Mclean):
Take Exit #51. At the top of the ramp, bear right onto Gallows Road. Turn left at either of the next two traffic lights to enter the hospital campus.
From the South (Alexandria/Springfield):
Take Exit #51. At the traffic light at the top of the ramp, turn left onto Gallows Road. Proceed to the second or third traffic light to turn left into the hospital campus.
Via Rt.50:
From the West (Fairfax):
Exit onto 650/Gallows Road. At the top of the ramp, bear to the right onto Gallows Road. Turn right at either the second or third light into the hospital campus.
From the East (Washington/Falls Church):
Pass under I-495 and exit onto 650/Gallows Road. At the light at the top of the ramp, turn left onto Gallows Road. Turn right at either the second or third light into the hospitals campus.
4. Occupational Health Office in consultation with the victim completes an accident report and files any necessary paperwork with the Virginia Department of Labor.

5. A copy of the report is retained on permanent file by Occupational Health Office.
