I. SCOPE

The policies and procedures provided herein apply to all George Mason University faculty, staff, students, visitors, and contracted services.  Administrative Policy Number 1408 applies to all George Mason University locations owned or leased.

George Mason University’s Environmental Management and Sustainability System (EMS2 ) brings together various departments and disciplines to participate in a strategic and organized evaluation of business practices and modifies them to create a sustainable and environmentally responsible business model.  The primary objectives of George Mason University’s EMS2 are to reduce or eliminate activities that negatively impact the environment, contribute to the efficiency of university operations, and conform to all applicable state and federal environmental regulations.
II. POLICY STATEMENT

George Mason University is committed to conducting operations in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.  George Mason University strives to become an exemplary model for sustainable development, community partnership, and environmental stewardship.  George Mason University manages this commitment to environmental protection and stewardship by implementing EMS2 to manage operations and activities that impact the environment.  George Mason University faculty, staff, and students will work collaboratively across departments to evaluate current activities and modify them accordingly to achieve and maintain compliance with environmental regulations, reduce pollution and waste, and develop sustainable business practices.
III. ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS

George Mason University will:

  • Comply with all federal and state environmental regulations.
  • Reduce waste and pollution through environmentally responsible resource procurement, consumption, and expanded recycling programs.
  • Enhance training and support programs for university students and staff to achieve EMS2 objectives.
  • Effectively communicate environmental goals and successes to both university and local communities.
  • Endeavor to continuously improve environmental performance through the use of the EMS2 Manual and reporting documents.

IV. RESPONSIBILITIES

The Environmental Health and Safety Office and Office of Sustainability will oversee the design, implementation, review, and modification of EMS2.  Faculty, staff, students, and members of the EMS2 Working Group will be responsible for implementing aspects of the EMS2 as it pertains to their activities, departments, employees, or operations.

V.  AMENDMENTS AND ADDITIONS

All amendments and additions to Administrative Policy Number 1408 are to be reviewed and approved by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Administration and the Office of the Provost/Executive Vice President.

VI. EFFECTIVE DATE AND APPROVAL

The policies herein are effective May 14, 2010.  This Administrative Policy shall be reviewed and revised, if necessary, annually and to become effective at the beginning of the University’s fiscal year, unless otherwise noted.
