Institutional Training Requirements

I. Scope:

This policy applies to all George Mason University employees and students and all other individuals required to complete Institutionally Required Trainings.

II. Policy Statement:

All employees, students, and other individuals are required to complete all applicable Institutionally Required Trainings. Institutionally Required Trainings will be assigned to employees and students and any other individual required to complete such trainings and must be completed by the applicable deadline.

III. Definitions:

Institutionally Required Training: means all mandatory employee, instructional/research faculty, and student trainings listed in this policy’s procedures, and all other training required by Federal or State regulations; required by position to safely or properly execute one’s responsibilities; or required by University Policy, Faculty Handbook, or Student Code of Conduct.

Responsible Unit: The university department responsible for identifying applicable Institutionally Required Trainings, developing said trainings, and monitoring compliance.

IV. Responsibilities:

Role Responsibilities
Employee/Student Upon notification, successfully complete assigned Institutionally Required Training on time.
Human Resources Maintain a list of Institutionally Required Training for employees, support training delivery and reporting, manage the compliance escalation process for employees, and oversee adherence to this policy.
Office of the Provost Monitor compliance, manage the compliance escalation process for instructional/research faculty specific trainings, and oversee adherence to this policy.
Responsible Unit Develop or participate in the development of Institutionally Required Trainings in compliance with applicable regulations and Institutional Training Procedures; assign employees, students, and others to Institutionally Required Trainings as appropriate; coordinate training compliance with supervisors and Human Resources as necessary.
Supervisor Monitor completion/compliance, support employee training, and enforce training requirements in accordance with Institutional Training Procedures.
University Life Monitor compliance, manage the compliance escalation process for mandatory student training, and oversee adherence to this policy.

 

V. Compliance:

Failure to complete assigned Institutionally Required Training will result in progressive compliance escalation in accordance with the Compliance Escalation Rubric documented in Institutional Training Procedures which may include supervisor notifications, loss of access to university systems/resources, referral to Student Conduct or Human Resources, and disciplinary actions.

VI. Timetable for Review:

This policy and its associated procedures will be reviewed triennially.

VII. Amendments:

Amendments will be approved by the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and by the Provost and Executive Vice President.

VIII. Dates:

This policy was approved May 12, 2026, and becomes effective July 1, 2026.
